DIY: Wall Mounting Kit for Flat Sceen TV (For under $20)
In our quest to save money, we are always looking for ways to cut corners. A few months ago we were able to trade in our broken TV projector for a new 50-inch flat screen TV, due to a warranty plan we had. The wall mounting kits were outrageously priced, most starting at $50 minimum. My genius husband declared he could make me one, that would be just as functional. This particular wall mount will not allow for tilt or swivel, but if you just want it flat on the wall, this is the way to go!
Shallow Strut (aka: 5/8 strut or kindorf strut)
2 bolts & 2 washers for wall side
2 bolts & washers for TV side, will need specific TV bolt size
Cut two pieces of strut, going just beyond the length of the mounting holes on the back of your flat screen TV. Mount the strut to the wall, making sure each bolt is in the wall stud, not just drywall.
Determine mounting bolt type needed for the back of your TV. Most owner's manuals will tell you what size screw/bolt you will need to mount your TV. Typically they are metric. Purchase 2 bolts and 2 washers to mount the strut to the back of the TV.
Here's a close up of what the fastened strut will look like on the back of the TV.
Slide the two struts together, interlocking them. Be sure they are completely interlocked prior to letting go.
Wha-la! For under $20 you just made your own flat screen TV wall mount!
