Update on Sophie: Our New Stray Dog

Well it's been 9 days today since this little angel arrived in our backyard, and needless to say, Sophie has become a permanent member of our family. So far, we've experienced a few bumps in the road-- an expensive initial vet bill (resulting in expensive heartworm treaments), a chewed up dog harness (resulting in a new $12 one), one poo accident indoors (my fault), jumped the kiddie gate that keeps her in her designated area within the house (resulting in a new, taller $80 gate), tore apart her plastic dog crate liner (resulting in a new $50 metal one), has some separation anxiety (resulting in bent bars on her crate), and discovered she is really scared of storms (resulting in one sleepless night for me). Other than that, things are going well! LOL! I'm still trying to figure her out, as she is doing the same to us.

What keeps us going with her, even through the frustrating moments? Passion and compassion. I believe that a dog is never too old to learn new tricks. With consistent training and a big dose of patience, she will slowly begin to realize what she can and cannot do within our household. She is sweet as all get-out, obeys general commands, and more importantly has a lot of love to give. She is also making great progress with her health. She has already gained 3 pounds! Today is the last day of her heartworm treatments, leaving her sore and not feeling well. Once she has healed, we will work on socializing her more with our other dog, Ginger. For now, they have seized barking at each other, and actually wag their tails when smelling each other through the gate. It is a slow moving, yet rewarding process. So blessed that God crossed our paths when he did!
