DIY: Creating a Distressed Frame

I recently acquired this old framed mirror (already removed mirror in photos). I thought it would go perfectly over the fireplace that we are currently revamping. I wasn't thrilled with the dated bronze color, but really liked the detail on the frame itself. I decided to give it a darker, distressed looked, to match my country farmhouse decor. Not sure if I will replace the mirror back into the frame, or find something else to fill the framed space. Decisions, decisions!
Original bronze-colored frame, with mirror removed.
Great detail on the frame, but didn't like the color.
Bought a small can of semi-gloss all-purpose black paint.
Using a foam brush, I applied the paint over the complete frame.
 Let it dry completely.
Give it a second coat of paint, to cover the bronze completely.
Once dry, use a fine-grade sanding block, to distress areas on the frame.
Focus on the edges, and surfaces around the frame. Sand just enough to bring the original bronze color through for that distressed look.
Now to figure out whether to replace the mirror or not?!?
If you have any ideas, leave me a comment below :)
